Place Of Refuge

Our hearts lately has been burdened by events and attitudes we see unfolding around us in the United States. We aren’t united. We are divided by political parties and beliefs. People’s rights seem to be valued over peoples’ lives. On and on we could go, and it breaks our hearts. And we know it does God’s too.

Jesus prayed before His death for all of us: “I pray that they will all be one, just as you and I are one—as you are in me, Father, and I am in you. And may they be in us so that the world will believe you sent me.” John 17:21 Not only did Jesus pray and die for us to be united, but His prayer was that by us being united, other people, those who are not believers, would be drawn toward God.

Now, we're not saying things are all bad. We see people truly loving God and others. We see lives changed by the power of God and of other people’s love in their lives. It’s inspiring and encouraging.

But sprinkled among the kindness and encouragement are words of complaining and judgment and condemnation. Of anger and selfishness. Or of staying silent when we should be speaking up about injustices around us.

Our country is in the middle of a great battle, and we know that the best way for us to battle is on our knees. And the best source to turn to is not the news or social media, but the very Word of God.

We are told in James 5:16 that “The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.” We may not have the power to meet the President or other authorities in our government, but we can pray for them, and God can do mighty things through our prayers. We may not be able to change other peoples’ hearts or minds with our words, but we have the power to pray for them and see God do miracles in their hearts through our prayers.

Pray that you and other believers would seek God in humility and that God would bringing healing to our nation.

2 Chronicles 7:14

14 If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

Pray that our nation would be able to emerge from its darkness and seek God and be a light to others.

Isaiah 60:2-3

2 For, behold, the darkness shall cover the earth, and gross darkness the people: but the Lord shall arise upon thee, and his glory shall be seen upon thee.

3 And the Gentiles shall come to thy light, and kings to the brightness of thy rising.

Pray that you, your family, and our nation would follow God and be blessed.

Psalm 33:12

12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord; and the people whom he hath chosen for his own inheritance.

Pray for your fellow citizens and all of our leaders in government.

1 Timothy 2:1-5

1 I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men;

2 For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.

3 For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour;

4 Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.

5 For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus;

Pray that God would give our government leaders, church leaders, and all citizens His wisdom and knowledge.

Daniel 2:20-21

20 Daniel answered and said, Blessed be the name of God for ever and ever: for wisdom and might are his:

21 And he changeth the times and the seasons: he removeth kings, and setteth up kings: he giveth wisdom unto the wise, and knowledge to them that know understanding:

Thank God that He is the one in full authority and in control of our nation.

Romans 13:1

1 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God.

Pray that God’s will would be done in our nation.

Matthew 6:9-10

9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.

10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.

Pray that our hearts and our nation would pursue righteousness rather than sin.

Proverbs 14:34

34 Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.

We may not always see the results of our prayers, but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t stop battling on our knees for our country. Remember the words of James 5:6: “The earnest prayer of a righteous person has great power and produces wonderful results.”
